# Argent vs. Appium

Your Appium suite took years to build, and it still runs every night. Appium MCP now lets coding agents start sessions, find elements and generate test code on top of it.

With Argent, your coding agent does the end-to-end testing. It taps through your app, checks each screen and profiles the slow parts. Paths that work become tests that run again after every change and in CI.

Based on each tool's public documentation, checked October 20, 2026.

## Where Argent goes further than Appium MCP

### The test passed. The list is still empty.

A locator confirms the list rendered, not why it's empty. On the iOS simulator, Argent shows the agent your app's requests and status codes, so it can spot the call that failed.

### Why does checkout stutter?

Appium MCP has no profiling tools. Argent profiles the app and tells the agent what froze. On iOS it also points to the slow code and what to try first.

### No WebDriver session to babysit

On simulators and emulators there's no driver to install and no WebDriverAgent to build. Physical iPhones need a small on-device runner, signed with a free Apple Personal Team.

### A passing path, kept without Java

Ask the agent to record a flow it got right, and Argent saves it as a YAML file that the agent and CI can replay. It sits next to your Appium suite, not in place of it.

## Where Appium still earns its keep

Appium has spent years collecting drivers, client libraries and device cloud integrations. When the job is a coded suite that has to run across languages, platforms and clouds, it can be a better fit.

### Your page objects are in Java, Python, Ruby or C#

Appium has official clients for Java, Python, Ruby and .NET C#, and community clients such as WebdriverIO. Tests that already work in your team's stack can stay there.

### Half your app is a webview

Appium switches between native and webview contexts within one session, and automates mobile browsers through its iOS and Android drivers.

### Desktop apps are in scope

Appium drivers cover macOS and Windows apps. Argent drives Electron and Chromium desktop apps, not native macOS or Windows ones.

## Argent next to Appium MCP

Appium drives apps through WebDriver and a driver per platform. Argent hands an AI agent the running app and the means to find out why it misbehaves.

| Feature | Argent | Appium |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Built for | Coding agents that build, check and fix any mobile app, native or cross-platform, in one session | Coded UI tests for native, hybrid, mobile web and desktop apps |
| AI agent support | MCP server and skills for Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code, Codex, Gemini CLI and any agent that runs shell commands | Appium MCP, with setup docs for Claude Code, Cursor and Gemini CLI |
| Platforms | iOS, Android, Apple TV, Android TV, Fire TV, Electron and Chromium apps | iOS, Android, macOS, Windows and browsers, through drivers |
| Physical devices | iPhones over USB with an on-device runner (a free Apple Personal Team signs it) and Android devices over adb | iPhones with a signed WebDriverAgent and Android devices with USB debugging |
| UI interaction | Taps, swipes, pinches, typing and hardware buttons, with targets from the accessibility tree | Element locators, gestures, drag and drop, raw W3C actions and opt-in vision-based element finding |
| Logs and debugging | Screenshots and the element tree on demand, plus the native view tree on iOS. Console logs in React Native and Electron apps | Page source and screenshots. No log or debugging tools in Appium MCP |
| Network inspection | Request URLs and status codes on the iOS simulator, with no proxy or certificate. Not in Flutter apps yet | No network tools in Appium MCP |
| Profiling | Xcode Instruments on iOS: hangs and CPU hotspots. Perfetto on Android: UI freezes. Works for any app | No profiling tools in Appium MCP |
| Repeatable tests | Recorded YAML flows with optional screenshot checks, replayed by the agent or by `argent e2e run` in CI | WebDriver tests in Java, Python, Ruby, C# and more. Appium MCP generates test code, documented as Java and TestNG |
| Device clouds | BrowserStack, AWS Device Farm, Limrun and TestMu AI, plus Argent Cloud with dedicated iOS simulators, which also run Appium | Runs on almost every device cloud, including BrowserStack, Sauce Labs, AWS Device Farm, TestMu AI and Perfecto |

## Appium MCP and Argent: questions from test engineers

### Does Appium have an MCP server?

Yes. Appium MCP comes from the Appium project. It lets MCP clients such as Claude Code, Cursor and Gemini CLI start sessions on simulators, emulators and real devices. From there the agent can find elements, use gestures, take screenshots and generate test code.

### Can Appium MCP read app logs or network requests?

No. Its tools drive the app, take screenshots and recordings, and generate tests. Vision-based element finding is opt-in with `AI_VISION_ENABLED`. There are no log, network, debugging or profiling tools. Argent adds profiling for any app, and on iOS simulators a list of the app's requests with their status codes.

### Is Argent a replacement for Appium?

Not for a cross-language regression suite running on a device cloud. Appium is built for that. Argent is built for the coding agent's inner loop: run the app, check the change, find out what broke and fix it. If that is the gap you are trying to fill, Argent is the closer match.

### What language does Appium MCP generate tests in?

Its test generation is documented as Java with TestNG. Argent doesn't write WebDriver code. The agent records YAML flows, with optional screenshot checks, which it can replay itself or you can run in CI with `argent e2e run`.

### Can I run my Appium tests on Argent Cloud?

Yes. Argent Cloud hosts iOS simulators you reach over the network, so your Appium server, Maestro, CI jobs or own scripts can drive them as well as Argent. A Runner costs $299 a month for up to six simulators running at once, with no meter on simulator time.

### Does Argent work with native and Flutter apps?

Yes. Tapping, screenshots, saved flows and profiling work for any app: Swift, Kotlin, Flutter, React Native or Expo. The iOS request list covers Swift and React Native apps, but not Flutter apps yet. Console logs need JavaScript inside the app, so they work in React Native and Electron apps, and the React profiler in React Native only.

### Is Appium free?

Yes. Appium and Appium MCP are open source under the Apache 2.0 license. Argent is also free to use locally.

## Keep the suite. Give the agent a closer look.

Your Appium tests can keep their nightly slot. Install Argent with one command, and the agent that changed the screen can tap through it, check what it shows and profile it before anyone files a bug.
